At times there is a need for gold screened according to mesh size. This can be for various reasons, including lockets, gold panning activities, special rings, etc. many of you may not be familiar with mesh size screening of gold.
There are worldwide standards for sizing gold, and by far the most common in the United States is the utilization of Tyler screens. For example, a four-mesh screen means that in every square inch of the screen there are four wires vertically and four horizontally. This means a matrix of 4x4 or 16 openings in every square inch. This sizes the gold accordingly. A 20 mesh screen means 20 wires per inch horizontally and 20 wires vertically, creating 400 openings per square inch.
The screen sizes we use by Tyler measurements are mesh size 4,6,8,9,10,12, 14,16,20,24,28,35,48, and less than 48.
For example, if you ordered one ounce of screen size 24 gold, then the size would be small enough to fall through the 20 mesh screen, but too large to fall through the 24 mesh screen. Your gold is therefore sized -20mesh +24 mesh. The minus sign means it goes through the screen and the plus sign means the gold stops on top of the screen.
Pricing is based upon screen size. Generally the gold that is "four mesh" has nice weight averaging about 1/2 pennyweight per piece, with swings up and down because of the thickness. The price per ounce generally ranges around $360 to $380 per ounce on $280 spot gold price. Check for up-to-date pricing.
Screen size 6 mesh weighs an average of about 1/4 pennyweight per piece, with swings up and down, the same as four mesh. This runs about $320 per ounce. Eight mesh sizing runs about $310 per ounce, and less than eight mesh runs around the spot price for gold.
Gold by size is generally hard to come by, and therefore the cost is generally equal to or higher than spot.
